About Mr. Lanting

Mr. Lanting a seasoned Dutch professional in tropical plant husbandry and agriculture economics, who has over 40 years of experience in tropical agriculture and rural development. He spent most of his career in India but worked also in other Asian and African countries. He consulted for World Bank and development agencies both governmental and non-governmental. He assisted Reliance Foundation and Arvind Cotton Mills in their rural development programmes. He is an expert in ecological agriculture which means he knows a lot about farming systems, their interaction with their environment. He promotes primarily non-chemical methods but uses chemical solutions if no other option is available. Farming is about farmer's income while doing as little damage as possible to the environment. Keeping the energy, water and nutrient cycle closed is important but equally important are farmer organizations.

This assignment was sub contracted by DHV (who implemented the Tungabhadra Irrigation Pilot Project TIPP-II) to provide agricultural development options for farmers in the left bank command area.

Agricultural development options were described for farmers in upper, middle and lower reaches of the left bank irrigation canal after a systematic inventory of present farming systems, problem encountered (environmental, production, credit, input supply and marketing) and social structure present (as many farmers are migrants from other areas). The follow up to the study was a PTD process in the selected villages.

The Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) through ISPWD-K assigned the task to develop a plan for bio-mass production in an implemented watershed. An inventory was made of existing natural vegetation and on farm bio-mass production.

The production levels were matched with existing demands for animal feed, fire wood, timber requirements, minor forest products etc. An inventory was made of soil and water resources available as well as land ownership and tenancy arrangements. Combining all of these, an outline plan was developed for bio-mass production development options.
